Im looking for my first car, I was thinking of getting either an 02′ WRX or an 04′ RSX but I just started working and insurance+car payments all of my money would go directly into car so I wanted something cheaper. Are there any good cars besides civics and integras I can mod and come pretty fast stock under $5000. Also would a 240sx 95 on up be a good start.
A: civics and integras aren’t good cars if you want speed because both are incredible slow and look ridiculous ‘modded’. You should be able to pick up an older model 5.0 Mustang, z28 camaro, or nissan z car for under 5. Not only are these cars already reasonably fast, they can go fast for cheaper than a rice grinder. Also alot more respectable on the street.

And what should I consider when buying my first car?
I’m a college student, so if you have any suggestions of cars that are good for college students let me know.
A: There are some good cars in this price range, but there are some really crappy ones also. Keep in mind that you don’t have to buy the first one you see, and that you should be able to get it checked out byu a mechanic before purchasing ($30-$60). Well worth the price.
Do you have cash? If not, you will not get a good car for this price range as the only sellers that will finance are in-house financing dealers. They attempt to sell their cars at a premium, and get a high financing rate to boot. Your $5000 car will end up costing what a decent $9000 car would have cost (after a few years considering maintenance/repairs, interest on the loan, and value of the car compared to the cost).
So my recommendation is if you have cash look for a Civic or Corolla from $3K-$5K. If you are financing, look for the same car but less than 10 years old and from $6Kto $9K.

What would be good fuel efficient cars under 5000?? During the fall I’m going to join the military (reserves) and after all the training I should have a car budget of about 5k.
A: Cars used to be much more fuel efficient than they are now. They were a lot lighter 15 years ago.
I think the best 1 liter Geo Metro in the world will be about $2500, and they’d get 45 or 50 mpg. There are lots of other options. You could get an old Honda Civic, VW Rabbit/Golf, Nissan Sentra, Toyota Tercel. Several of the little Chrysler products got good gas mileage too, but they’ve gotten hard to find.

A: definetly an older mustang!! like a 1988 all the way to 2004 are fairly cheap and drive hella fucking amazing!!! you could also look into a pontiac grand prix if you want less horsepower… or if you want a truck look into a toyota tacoma which is the most likley to NOT break down.

A: Acura Integra, Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Subaru Impreza, Acura Legend, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Pontiac Firebird, Toyota Celica, Chevrolet Camaro, Nissan Altima, Nissan Sentra, Nissan Maxima. Depends on the year, but those are some good choices. When I bought my ‘98 Altima GXE it was only $3800. I bought my Acura Integra for $3700. Both are/were great cars. Good luck!

A: check out hyundai elantras and accents they actually have fairly good reliability ratings and low resale values so you can get a car with low millage in good condition for fairly cheap. Just make sure you have it inspected by an independent mechanic before you buy it which goes for any used car.

especially if you are budget conscious and looking to save money instead of wasting it on car payments, the accord is a great way to go. Pay cash for it, and get ready to drive it for years to come.
